I once felt language strike me like a storm — a flash that rearranged my heart’s circuitry. “Lightning in the Guts” came later, when that shock turned to song. It’s a roar against hollow talkers and self-appointed saviours, and a salute to those rare souls — poets, artists, truth-tellers — who speak because the charge inside them leaves them no choice.
LIGHTNING IN THE GUTS
Here comes the actor, looking mighty fine.
Here comes the pop star see his image shine.
Here’s the politician, spoiling for a fight
And here comes the priest looking whiter yet than white
You hear them chatter;
Hear them begging for your trust…
There’s only one thing that matters
Have they lightning in their guts?
Here comes the teacher, the counsellor and the coach
Tongues full of miracles, All beyond reproach.
Here come the police the Doctor and your dad
All about to give the best advice you ever had..
You hear them chatter – hear them begging for your trust. There’s only one thing that matters/ have they lightning in their guts
Bridge). Seems like everybody has something to say
Pressure is relentless every single day.
There’s a queue down the street goes way around the bend
One thing sure is certain it ain’t ever gonna end…
Hear it in the school-room, hear it in the bar
Hear it on the TV & the radio in your car.
Out there on the internet, every point of view
Someone, somewhere, every day, tellin’ you what to do
You hear them chatter
Here comes the rule book sermon’s on the way.
Facebook fuckin rumours, stinking out the day.
They can shout from the heavens that don’t mean I trust
I only listen to the poets who have lightning in their guts!
You hear them chatter… x 2,3,4 whatever!!
